LIVING WITH OSTEOPOROSIS

If you have osteoporosis, it is natural to be concerned about how the condition will affect your life. The diagnosis does not mean you have to avoid activities that interest you; it simply means you need to make some adjustments. Complications may arise when there is poor management of the condition. To avoid these complications adherence to the prescribed medication is important. In addition, there are some things you can do to improve your outcome.

WHAT CAN I DO?

Exercise - Staying active is the best way to avoid falls and slips. Exercise can improve your balance, coordination and reflexes. Strength and balance exercises are beneficial in osteoporosis. If you find yourself struggling, ask your doctor to refer you to a physiotherapist to assist with safe exercises.

Nutrition – It is important to aim for a well-balanced diet with adequate carbohydrates, protein, vitamins and minerals. If you are struggling to consume enough vitamins, opt for supplements.

Clothing - Select shoes with a good grip at the bottom for everyday use. Avoid loose, backless and high-heeled shoes as these increase the risk of falling.

Make adjustments - Declutter your house. The less furniture, the less chances of tripping over it and falling. Make use of items such as non-slip carpets, especially in the bathroom. If needed, install handrails at staircases and in bathrooms.

If you have any concerns regarding your treatment, speak to your doctor.
